Ninety volunteers are being sought in Rochester for a new clinical trial for an experimental COVID-19 vaccine.

Clinical researchers at University of Rochester Medical Center and Rochester Regional are collaborating on the trial in partnership with Pfizer and BioNTech. URMC will be conducting the recruiting of volunteers for the study, as well as the clinical trial. Actual testing will be conducted at Rochester General Hospital.

A total of 90 volunteers are needed to participate in the study in the Rochester area. Participants need to be between ages 18 and 85. The vaccine will be given to designated volunteers in the next couple weeks.

Rochester was one of four sites chosen in the United States. NYU Grossman School of Medicine, the University of Maryland School of Medicine, and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center are the other sites.

Clinical vaccine trials for the same Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine are currently underway in Germany.

Just seven clinical trials are being conducted around the world for coronavirus vaccines.

As the trials are getting underway, Pfizer and BioNTech are beginning to scale up production to allow for millions of vaccine doses later this year and possibly hundreds of millions in 2021.

Anyone interested in being part of the clinical trial should call (585) 922-5944 or send an email to rghcovidvaccinetrial@rochesterregional.org.
