ittsford, N.Y. – St. John Fisher College says it has recorded 52 confirmed cases of COVID-19 over the past nine days.
That is one of the highest case totals seen at a local college since reporting began last month.
In a statement, the college says it detected a cluster in one of its dormitories, Dorsey Hall, with two-thirds of positive-testing resident students living there. The college says a large number of students have been quarantined or isolated off-campus.
School officials say they are seeing an increase in the virus that causes COVID in the wastewater in all of its residential areas; saliva surveillance in those areas continues. In that process, which takes between 24-48 hours, saliva samples are taken and tested for the virus that causes COVID. If they are present, students are required to undergo a COVID test.
Fisher’s uptick in positive cases comes after various clusters have been reported at other local colleges in recent weeks.
In early October, Nazareth College said it was monitoring a cluster that stemmed from an off-campus gathering. Last week, Keuka College announced it was temporarily suspending all on-campus operations following a triggering event at an off-campus gathering.
Case totals at other local colleges include the following:
- SUNY Geneseo: 15
- Nazareth College: 14
- SUNY Brockport: 10
- RIT: 6
- University of Rochester: 1
