ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — The winter storm that dumped snow in Texas early this week barreled into the Rochester region Monday evening. Municipalities across the region spent the day preparing to deal with heavy snowfall overnight and into Tuesday morning.

News 8 found crews salting and plowing the roadways throughout the night and into early Tuesday morning. You can track plows as they move through the City of Rochester through the city’s PlowTrax service.

“Side streets aren’t too bad, main roads aren’t too bad,” Joe Welch, of Joe Welch Inc. who plows for the City of Rochester said. He did warn of the danger of driving over bridges and the importance to take extra precautions.

“There’s a lot of ice underneath so watch the bridges,” he said. “There’s no dirt, no foundation under them so the cold air gets under them and freezes them.”

Officials from AAA say its storms like these that emphasize the importance of keeping your car prepped. April Engram, communications specialists at AAA said it’s important to have, “an additional cell phone car charger, a first aid kit, a blanket of course, a shovel is especially helpful bearing the winter weather,” Engram added. “And then something for traction such as sand, salt, or even cat litter could help you.”

Irondequoit’s director of public works says his team will be ready to go once the snow starts piling up.

“It’s a big one,” said Bob Kiley, “bigger than we’ve had all year long no doubt about that. We’ve been prepared for this type of event throughout the snow and ice season.”
