The Miami Heat have acquired two-time NBA MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo and veteran forward Bobby Portis from the Milwaukee Bucks in one of the biggest deals in recent league history, ending the superstar’s 13-year run with the franchise he helped lead to the 2021 NBA championship.
ESPN’s Shams Charania reported: “BLOCKBUSTER: The Milwaukee Bucks are trading franchise icon Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis to the Miami Heat for Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, 3 first-round picks (including No. 13), 1 pick swap and 1 second-rounder, sources tell ESPN.”
Milwaukee received a substantial package in return, including Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr. and rookie Kasparas Jakucionis, along with the No. 13 overall pick in this year’s draft, unprotected first-round selections in 2031 and 2033, a 2030 first-round pick swap and a 2033 second-round pick. Miami had long been viewed as Antetokounmpo’s preferred destination, with the Heat pairing the 10-time All-Star alongside Bam Adebayo in pursuit of another championship.
The trade closes a remarkable chapter for the Bucks, who selected Antetokounmpo in 2013 and watched him develop into one of the franchise’s greatest players. During his tenure, the Greek star captured two MVP awards, a Defensive Player of the Year honor and delivered Milwaukee’s first NBA title in 50 years. After several unsuccessful attempts to build another championship contender around him, the Bucks elected to pivot toward a youth movement and stockpile future assets.
For Miami, the move provides the franchise with the marquee superstar it has pursued since reaching the NBA Finals earlier this decade. Antetokounmpo, 31, is eligible for a lucrative contract extension and immediately elevates the Heat into the Eastern Conference title conversation. The addition of Portis further strengthens a front court that now features two All-Star-caliber big men in Antetokounmpo and Adebayo.
