The Pro Football Hall of Famer who was nicknamed “Prime Time” wore the same number for the majority of his career, including with the Falcons for the first five seasons after being drafted in 1989.

“Prime was hatin’ on me. He told me don’t wear it,” Gurley told 92.3 The Game in Atlanta on Friday. “If I was Prime, I wouldn’t want nobody be wearing my number either.”

Gurley wore No. 30 in his first five seasons with the Rams, who cut him March 19, and No. 3 at the University of Georgia. Cornerback Desmond Trufant, who was released this offseason, wore No. 21 in Atlanta over the past seven years.

Gurley, 25, signed a one-year deal with the Falcons a day after being cut. He amassed 70 touchdowns and 7,494 yards during a Rams tenure that included three Pro Bowls. His production slipped last year, however, after being a nonfactor in Super Bowl LIII amid a mysterious injury.
