A spokesperson for UR Medicine confirms a patient at Golisano Children’s Hospital may have an inflammatory condition associated with COVID-19.

Wednesday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo directed the state’s health department to issue an advisory to hospitals to be on the lookout for a condition known as pediatric multi-system inflammatory syndrome associated with COVID-19.

The State Department of Health says the syndrome, which has potential cardiovascular symptoms, has elements that overlap with toxic shock syndrome and Kawasaki disease, and may occur in a period following a mild COVID-19 case. The department says a potential link between the syndrome and COVID-19 was reported in the United Kingdom.

As of Tuesday, 64 children in New York state were said to be suffering from the condition. The state did not say where those cases were centered.

In a statement, state Health Commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker said, “Thankfully, most children with COVID-19 only experience mild symptoms, but in some a dangerous inflammatory syndrome can develop. While we continue to reduce cases through social distancing, discoveries like this remind us we are still in the middle of our response to this deadly pandemic.”

In a statement to 13WHAM, a UR Medicine spokesperson confirmed a report that a patient at Golisano Children’s Hospital may be showing signs of the illness. Specific details about the patient are not being released.

A spokesperson for the Monroe County Health Department told 13WHAM information about this inflammatory illness is not required to be reported at the local level. Hospitals are required to report cases to the state.
